Duane Reade teams up with the New York Mets for ‘Honorary Captain’ program

BY Antoinette Alexander

FLUSHING, N.Y. — The New York Mets announced the launch of the "Honorary Captain" program presented by Duane Reade, which gives fans the opportunity to be an honorary team captain and bring out the Mets lineup card before one of the Subway Series games, which will be held July 1 to 3 at Citi Field.

Winners of the "Honorary Captain" program presented by Duane Reade also will receive four VIP tickets to one of the Subway Series games and a Mets jersey. The program also is sponsored by Precise, from the maker of Tylenol.

In addition, through the "2 Home Run Challenge," the Mets and Duane Reade will continue to reward fans this season every time the Mets hit two or more home runs in a game. Fans at Citi Field can show their ticket stub the following day at Duane Reade locations for special discounts throughout the season. Fans watching home or road games on SportsNet New York TV can participate by visiting SNY.tv to print out a coupon for the same discounts. This month, fans will receive $5 off any purchase of $25 or more.

"Being able to join forces with such a well-known New York sports franchise like the Mets continues the natural synergy that we at Duane Reade look to maintain with New Yorkers," Duane Reade SVP merchandising and marketing Paul Tiberio said. "The ‘2 Home Run Challenge’ offers an exciting opportunity for us to engage our customers while offering a special discount based on the performance, on any given day, of their favorite sports team."

Low-fat diet can cut diabetes risk

BY Allison Cerra

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Researchers at the University of Alabama in Birmingham found that controlling fat intake could help cut one’s risk of developing diabetes.

To examine this, researchers divided 69 overweight nondiabetics, who were at risk for the disease, into two groups, placing the subjects on a diet with modest reductions in either fat or carbohydrate for eight weeks. The lower fat group received a diet comprised of 27% fat and 55% carbohydrate; the lower carbohydrate group’s diet was 39% fat and 43% carbohydrate.

"At eight weeks, the group on the lower fat diet had significantly higher insulin secretion and better glucose tolerance and tended to have higher insulin sensitivity," said Barbara Gower, professor in the Department of Nutrition Sciences at UAB and lead author of the study. "These improvements indicate a decreased risk for diabetes."

The new study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
