Discount grocer announces expansion into Pittsburgh, Ohio markets

SALISBURY, N.C. — Discount grocer Bottom Dollar Food is hiring more than 800 associates over the next several months to begin to prepare for store openings next year, the company announced Wednesday.

"We look forward to expanding in Pittsburgh and Youngstown, Ohio, next year, and bringing new jobs to these areas," stated Bottom Dollar Food president Meg Ham. Bottom Dollar Food is expected to open 14 stores in early 2012. 

Bottom Dollar Food opened its first store in High Point, N.C., on Sept. 21, 2005, and opened its first store in Pennsylvania on Oct. 8, 2010. The banner has since grown to 52 stores in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In addition to its expansion in Pittsburgh and Youngstown, Ohio, Bottom Dollar Food also remains focused on expanding in the greater Philadelphia market, which currently encompasses 21 stores in the state of Pennsylvania and three stores in New Jersey.

The announcement follows the release of third-quarter earnings results by Delhaize America, the U.S. division of Delhaize Group, which owns Bottom Dollar Food. The company said that the banner has garnered some positive feedback in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

Diabetes Prevention and Control Alliance launches programs in D.C. area

WASHINGTON — Rite Aid, UnitedHealth Group and the YMCA are partnering to offer community-based programs to combat Type 2 diabetes in the Washington, D.C., area through the Diabetes Prevention and Control Alliance, the three companies said.

The alliance marked the launch of the programs by having a community forum hosted by the YMCA of Greater Metropolitan Washington featuring such panelists as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Diabetes Translation director Ann Albright. Rite Aid joined the alliance in September and supports patients enrolled in its programs through select stores in New York and Washington.

The alliance, which is launching the effort as part of its "Not Me" campaign, said the incidence of diabetes in the Washington area — 11%, compared with 8.7% nationwide — supported the need for the programs, which include the Diabetes Prevention Program, a group-based intervention program that helps people who are at high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes prevent the disease through modest weight loss promoted through healthy eating, increased physical activity and other lifestyle changes.

FDA approves Tandem insulin pump

SAN DIEGO — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new insulin-delivery system for Type 1 diabetes made by Tandem Diabetes Care, the company said Wednesday.

Tandem announced the approval of the T:slim, a pump that the company said is the first to have a color touch screen and is the smallest insulin pump system available, in addition to being one of the first to be approved under the FDA’s new Infusion Pump Improvement initiative.

"With the clearance of T:slim, Tandem Diabetes Care has an opportunity to set a new standard in insulin pump infusion therapy," Tandem president and CEO Kim Blickenstaff said. "In creating T:slim, we spoke with more than 4,000 healthcare professionals and people with diabetes, and the clear message we heard was, ‘Make it cool and make it uncomplicated to use. Give us access to the most advanced features without the extra effort.’"
