CVS/pharmacy helps customers save at the pump

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS/pharmacy is helping its shoppers save money on gas this summer with a new program that enables customers to earn free gas by purchasing select items at its stores nationwide.

With gas prices reaching $4 per gallon nationally, CVS/pharmacy is offering members of its ExtraCare Rewards program the ability to earn one $10 gift card to Exxon/Mobil, Shell, BP Amoco or BP Arco every week by spending $30 on specially marked items found in the weekly CVS/pharmacy circular. The program runs from May 22 to Aug. 28.

All of the qualifying products will be tagged with a "Get Free Gas" icon to make them easily identifiable. Eligible items will rotate each week.

Once ExtraCare customers reach the $30 required purchase threshold, a special coupon will print on their receipt that can be redeemed immediately in store for a $10 gas card. If customers prefer to wait to redeem their coupon, they have up to 30 days to do so. There is a limit of one redemption per week for each ExtraCare cardholder.

Safeway raises $10.4 million for people with disabilities

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway and its charitable arm, the Safeway Foundation, announced that its fundraising efforts to benefit such organizations as Easter Seals, Special Olympics and others garnered $10.4 million.

Safeway’s month-long People with Disabilities fundraising campaign was carried out in the company’s nearly 1,700 stores during the month of April. The funds were raised from customer contributions and will be used to provide assistance, job training, therapy and social outlets to people who live with physical or developmental disabilities, Safeway said.

“We are grateful to our customers who chose to help make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities,” said Larree Renda, Safeway EVP and chair of the Safeway Foundation. “Thanks to their generosity, Easter Seals, Special Olympics and other organizations that support people with disabilities will be even better positioned to assist this important, but often overlooked, part of our population.”

Publix ends partnership with The Little Clinic

LAKELAND, Fla. — Supermarket chain Publix has confirmed the termination of the lease arrangements with The Little Clinic within select store locations in Florida and Georgia.

The move marks the end of Publix’s five-year partnership with The Little Clinic, which is part of Solera Capital’s portfolio. Solera Capital had acquired The Little Clinic’s predecessor in 2005.

In 2010, private investment fund Solera Capital sold the remainder of its Little Clinic business to Kroger. Those Kroger-owned Little Clinic locations are not closing.

In a statement sent to Drug Store News, Publix stated that it has "decided to terminate our lease agreement with Solera Clinics, the owner of The Little Clinic, to allow us the opportunity to better focus on our core grocery and pharmacy business."

A statement on the Publix’s website indicated that 31-of-the-40 in-store clinic locations in Florida and Georgia closed as of May 9. The closing dates for the remaining nine locations have not yet been announced.

In a statement sent to Drug Store News, a Solera Clinics representative stated, “We appreciate the hard work of the employees of the Publix in-store clinics to make these operations a success. These clinics were early entrants in the retail clinic industry and evolved into a cornerstone of the consumer healthcare movement by bringing innovation and choice into the healthcare landscape. We see great opportunity in consumer-focused health care, in and beyond retail clinics. We will continue to work with Publix and our other partners to bring convenient, affordable and innovative health-and-wellness solutions to consumers and employers.”
