Costco names new chairman
ISSAQUAH, Wash. — Costco has named one of its longtime directors chairman of its board of directors. The company on Thursday announced the board’s board election of Hamilton “Tony” James to the position.
James is Blackstone Group president and COO, as well as a member of Blackstone Group Management’s board of directors. He is a member of Blackstone Management Committee and sits on each of the firm’s investment committees. James has been a director of Costco since August 1988, becoming its lead independent director in 2005.

Mars Petcare introduces Crave pet food
FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Mars Petcare is bringing a new high-protein, grain-free line of food to the pet aisle with its new Crave brand. The brand portfolio includes 12 recipes across dry dog, dry cat and wet cat food.
“Every dog and cat shares a connection with their wild ancestors — from their natural behaviors to their nutritional needs,” Mars Petcare marketing director Eric Huston said. “What sets the Crave brand apart is that we're offering specialty-quality nutrition at a price designed for the masses, making it affordable and convenient for all pet owners to implement a protein-rich diet that satisfies their dog or cat's inner animal.”
The dry dog food is available in varieties featuring protein from chicken, lamb and venison and salmon and ocean fish. The dry cat food has varieties with protein from chicken, salmon and ocean fish and chicken and salmon. And the wet cat food varieties include turkey pâté, chicken pâte, chicken and beef pâté, turkey and duck pâté and salmon and trout pâté.
The foods all are grian free and include no chicken by-product meal, corn, wheat, soy protein, artificial flavors or artificial preservatives, the company said. Crave products carry suggested retail price ranges from $11.99-$44.99 for dry dog food bags, $7.49-$32.99 for dry cat food bags and $1.19-$13.99 for wet cat food two-packs and multi-packs. The products currently are available from Meijer, Target, Ahold Kroger, Amazon and Chewy and Walmart.com. Walmart stores carry only wet and dry cat products.

CVS Health sets sights on recruiting older workers
WOONSOCKET, R.I. — In an effort to differentiate itself, CVS Health is looking to tap into the 24.8% of the workplace the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects will be aged 55 years and older by 2024. The company — which currently has a workforce that is 24% older than 50 years of age — has announced that it’s actively recruiting older employees.
“Mature workers play an integral role in the culture at CVS Health by providing increased experience, dependability and a desire to learn new skills,” CVS Health VP workforce strategies and chief diversity officer David Casey said. “Some have been with the company for decades, while others joined our team more recently as a second or third career.”
Among the company’s efforts around mature workers is its Talent Is Ageless initiative, which was created to recruit and retain employees aged 50 years and older by cultivating public and private partnerships. Among the partnerships are such organizations as the American Society on Aging, Experience Works and AARP, among others.
Casey also highlighted having a workforce that contains substantial amounts of mature workers as uniquely positioning CVS Health as a boon for its customer service.
“We know that 9% of Americans aged 65 and older are using at least one prescription drug a month, and 40% use at least five,” he said. “So as we see the baby boomer generation age, having colleagues across the company who can personally relate to these customers and patients is a differentiator for us.”
The Talent is Ageless program also allows for such modifications as telecommuting, flextime, job sharing and compressed work weeks as a way to help mature workers stay in the workplace through its Alternate Work Arrangements program.
“By looking for new ways to integrate the wants and needs of mature workers into our culture, we can ensure that everyone has a place within our company,” Casey said.
Have been with CVS 41 years. Have held various positions Assistant Manager, Manager (35 years) and my last 5 years as a Shift Supervisor (by choice). Over 4 decades looking back I find the baby boomer era as having the best work ethic. Yes at times you can find a diamond in the ruff that weighs up to the boomers. My experience appears to be an asset to my manager as he is always asking advice on how I would handle various situations. My Regional Manager, District Manager, Loss Prevention Manager and Store manager don't want me to pull the plug and totally leave. Because of my age I have never been asked to retire instead I was asked to stay a couple days a week, which I decided to do. I'm a people person and guess I would miss the interaction with customers and employees.
What a nice way to add a different perspective to CVS' workforce. And a fresh viewpoint when other company's leadership consider older employees not part of the future of the company.
