The College of Physicians of Philadelphia elects first nurse practitioner
PHILADELPHIA — The Fellowship of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia on Friday elected the first nurse practitioner to its ranks: Sandra Ryan, Walgreens’ Take Care Health Systems chief nurse practitioner officer and clinical advocate.
“Through [Ryan’s] leadership, she has demonstrated commitment to enhancing the role that nursing can play in the future of health care,” stated George Wohlreich, director and CEO and the Thomas W. Langfitt Chair. “Through her dedication and advocacy, she’s benefitted nurses and nurse practitioners by opening doors to new opportunities, helped to reinforce the value of a collaborative healthcare team to take care of a patient and increased access for patients to receive high-quality, convenient health care.”
One-of-6 founding officers of Take Care Health Systems and a founding board member of the Convenient Care Association, Ryan was the first chief nurse practitioner officer in the convenient care industry. She has paved the way for the nursing profession and nursing leadership within the evolving and growing industry. Ryan has helped develop and implement clinical standards and evidenced-based guidelines delivered by operators in this retail-based setting.
Within Take Care Health Systems, she is credited with implementing a companywide quality assurance program, ensuring consistency in quality care through the establishment of standard operating procedures using nationally recognized evidence-based guidelines. In addition, she’s helped to lead the development of a proprietary electronic medical record system used at Take Care Clinics at select Walgreens nationwide.
Ryan has been the recipient of the American College of Nurse Practitioners’ Nancy Sharp Cutting Edge award and the Retail Clinician Congress’ CARE Leadership Award for her contributions to nurse practitioner practice in the convenient care industry.
Ryan has more than 25 years of healthcare and leadership experience and is a decorated U.S. Air Force officer. Ryan earned a B.S.N. in nursing from Niagara University and a M.S.N. from Arizona State University. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and an executive nurse fellow in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The College was founded in 1787 by a group of physicians including Benjamin Rush and is the nation’s oldest medical society dedicated to advancing the cause of health while upholding the ideals and heritage of medicine, the college stated.
CVS/pharmacy enhances mobile features for greater convenience
WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS/pharmacy Friday announced enhanced shopping and prescription refill functionality for its mobile site, located at m.CVS.com, as well as iPhone and Android apps, enabling shoppers to use mobile devices to manage their ExtraCare Rewards accounts, scan and send prescription refills, and order photo prints from CVS Photo Centers.
Customers accessing CVS/pharmacy’s mobile website can now take advantage of several features of the ExtraCare Rewards Program. This new functionality lets shoppers:
Load select ExtraCare coupons received via email directly to their ExtraCare card through the "Send to Card" digital savings option;
View the available balance of ExtraBucks Rewards;
Check ExtraCare transaction history; and
Order a new ExtraCare Rewards card to replace a missing or lost card.
In addition, CVS/pharmacy launched a set of mCommerce options for shoppers using photo services. Customers using smartphones can now:
View photo albums and slideshows;
Order prints for in-store pickup in about an hour;
Share photos with friends and family.
For customers who have downloaded CVS/pharmacy’s iPhone or Android app, CVS/pharmacy is making it easier to manage prescriptions. Customers with the iPhone or Android app can now use their smartphones to scan and send rapid refills (no sign-in required) to their local CVS/pharmacy for up to six prescriptions at once, just by using the camera in their mobile devices and the CVS/pharmacy app. These refills can be sent by scanning the prescription label directly. The apps also include a quick-response code scanner that customers can use for scanning any QR code at CVS/pharmacy stores or any other retailer.
Beyond the prescription refill functionality, the same ExtraCare Rewards Program management now available through the CVS/pharmacy mobile site has been added to the CVS/pharmacy iPhone and Android apps.
These features are in addition to the already launched features that allow shoppers to spot nearby CVS/pharmacy stores by using their phone’s GPS, check their weekly circular and find MinuteClinic locations and services.
Survey: Cyber Monday gaining traction as post-Thanksgiving retailing event
BOSTON — Almost 2-in-5 people plan to shop Cyber Monday — the Monday after Thanksgiving when online retailers historically offer steep discounts and special promotions — according to a Consumer Pulse study of more than 1,400 U.S. consumers conducted by Boston-based custom research firm Chadwick Martin Bailey and iModerate Research Technologies that was released Friday.
While it still lags behind Black Friday in volume of sales, according to ComScore, Cyber Monday is the heaviest online shopping day of the year with sales topping $1 billion in 2010, compared with the same year’s Black Friday sales of $10.6 billion, 38% of people plan to shop on Cyber Monday, while a nearly identical percentage (39%) plans to shop Black Friday. And as many as 61% of Cyber Monday shoppers will also be searching stores for deals the day after Thanksgiving.
“Online retailers have clearly taken notice and are making strong preparation,” stated Jeff McKenna, senior consultant at Chadwick Martin Bailey. “You will be seeing a big push by online retailers concurrent with Black Friday events as they seek to attract online shoppers. Knowing that many Black Friday shoppers also intend to shop online, they are a prime target for online offers.”
The study also looks at promotions motivating holiday shoppers — 52% of online shoppers list free shipping as the number one motivation to purchase. In-store or online, consumers are on the hunt for deals, only 15% plan to spend more, half plan to spend the same as last year, and nearly a third intend to spend less.
