APhA, Cardinal Health Foundation join forces to curb Rx abuse

SEATTLE — The American Pharmacists Association has teamed up with the Cardinal Health Foundation to fight against prescription drug abuse through several initiatives.

With funding support from the Cardinal Health Foundation, APhA members will take an active role in preventing the abuse and misuse of prescription medications, including the following initiatives:

  • APhA will encourage its professional and student members to utilize two toolkits, which can be accessed at CardinalHealth.com/GenerationRx, that contain talking points, presentation materials and tips to make it time-efficient and easy for pharmacists and others to discuss the issue of prescription drug abuse in a variety of environments;

  • A competition among APhA’s Academy of Student Pharmacist chapters, whereby student members utilized Cardinal Health’s GenerationRx toolkit to raise awareness of prescription drug abuse in their communities. Five student chapters recently were recognized for their efforts;

  • The APhA GenerationRx Award of Excellence, endowed by the Cardinal Health Foundation, which each year will recognize one pharmacist for outstanding efforts in prescription medication abuse prevention; and

  • The APhA will develop a GenerationRx Preceptor program, which will engage pharmacy educators in efforts to raise awareness of the dangers of prescription drug abuse.

“We believe that as trusted healthcare experts, pharmacists and student pharmacists can play an important role in helping parents, educators, community leaders and teens better understand the dangers of prescription drug abuse,” said Jessica Lineberger, manager of the Cardinal Health Foundation. “We look forward to partnering with [the] APhA to engage [its] members in the fight to save thousands of lives through prescription drug abuse prevention.”

Navarro recognized for community involvement

MIAMI — Recognized for its commitment to the community, Navarro Discount Pharmacies won the Top 100 Minority Business Award for large-company community involvement from the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce.

Navarro received the award during a special luncheon honoring other minority-owned businesses at Jungle Island in Miami on March 24.

"As a community pharmacy serving Hispanics, it is very important for us to participate in activities and organizations in all of the neighborhoods where we do business," stated Steve Kaczynski, Navarro CEO. "We are grateful to the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce for recognizing our efforts in the Hispanic community."

In the past year, Navarro has participated in more than 250 community events. Focused on wellness and families, Navarro created Wellness Wednesdays, which offer free in-store vascular and diabetes health screenings, smoking-cessation classes, a pediatric window for working parents and free prescription delivery.

Navarro also contributes to a variety of causes and local organizations through in-store collections and, in some cases, has contributed with matching collections. To date, Navarro has collected and donated tens of thousands of dollars to a variety of local charities in the community, including the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, Amigos for Kids, Centro Mater, the American Diabetes Association, CAMACOL, Dade County Public Schools, Project Vacant Streets, Chile earthquake relief and Haiti earthquake relief.

The Miami-based company was founded in Havana, Cuba, in 1940, and opened its first U.S. location in 1961. There currently are 28 existing store locations, plus three under construction.

MedPro Rx makes Facebook debut

RALEIGH, N.C. — A specialty infusion pharmacy has joined the social media realm.

MedPro Rx’s president, Nancy McFarlane, said that the company has launched a Facebook page, which will share MedPro Rx’s news, updates, blog posts and photos with its community. Additionally, the page will expand the company’s online presence and customer service focus for clients, healthcare consumers, providers and third-party payers, McFarlane said.

“Our Facebook page is a great tool that will enable us to better communicate our mission, connect information and work with our community," she said. “At MedPro Rx, we are always searching for the latest ways to provide the best possible customer service experiences for our clients, and the addition of Facebook is one more venue we can utilize.”
