AMG Medical honors veterans with annual national program

BY Michael Johnsen

ALPHARETTA, Ga. Sam’s Club locations on Wednesday kicked off “Hugo Salutes Our Veterans,” a national program that will provide 36,000 Hugo folding canes free of charge to U.S. military veterans in need of mobility assistance.

“All of us at AMG Medical want to express our deepest appreciation to all of the members of our military. Thank you for your service,” stated Philip delBuey, global president of AMG Medical. “Our company’s mission is all about helping people stay active and connected to family, friends and the community, and we hope that many veterans will participate in Hugo Salutes.”

Hugo Salutes Our Veterans has significantly grown from its 2007 launch by AMG Medical. AMG Medical gave away 5,000 canes that year to honor the parents and relatives of its employees who served in the U.S. military. In 2009, Hugo Salutes gave out 25,000 canes on Veterans Day.

This year, with the backing of Sam’s Club, Schiff, First Quality, Member’s Mark, U.S. Nutrition, Fixodent, Poise, Joint Juice, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson and AMG Medical, Hugo Salutes Our Veterans will be greatly expanded to give out 36,000 canes over three days — Veterans Day and the days before and after.

The Hugo folding cane that will be given out retails for $29.99. It is a “patriotic blue" with an ergonomic comfort-grip handle, appropriate for both left- and right-handed users. Sturdy, functional and stylish, it has multiple height settings to comfortably meet the needs of most people. The Hugo folding cane easily unfolds, locks into position for use and also includes a handle safety strap for extra confidence. To store, the cane conveniently folds into four sections.

Study: Weight gain among lower protein formula-fed infants is similar to breast-fed ones

BY Michael Johnsen

MADISON, N.J. Newly published findings indicated that infants fed a lower-protein infant formula developed by Pfizer Nutrition gained weight at a similar rate to those who were breast-fed, according to a study published online Wednesday in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

"This study showed that when we fed infants with a formula that contained specially adjusted levels of protein that more closely matched those found in breast milk, these babies grew at a rate similar to breast-fed babies," stated study author Rosario Capeding. "As we learn more about the importance of nutrition during early childhood, we recognize there is a critical need to ensure nutrients are received in the most appropriate proportions to support appropriate growth and development."

Added Patricia DeRusso, chief medical officer and VP Pfizer Nutrition: "At Pfizer Nutrition, we are committed to developing infant formulas that help formula-fed babies to achieve growth and health outcomes similar to human milk-fed babies. This study further supports the improved nutrient composition in our newly reformulated Gold line of infant formula, which will allow us to continue to provide growing children with the right amount of the nutrients they need during their critical early years."
