American Diabetes Association encourages participation in annual Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes event
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Just a few months after Novo Nordisk announced it would serve as the national premier sponsor for the American Diabetes Association’s annual Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes event in 2011 and 2012, the ADA is encouraging Americans to participate in this year’s annual fundraising walk.
The walk, which takes place in about 135 cities across the country, supports ADA’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes, as well as to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
National sponsors include Novo Nordisk, Cary’s sugar-free syrup, Equal zero-calorie sweetener, PureVia all-natural zero-calorie sweetener and the Dignity Memorial Network.

Safeway launches ‘America’s Most Natural City’ contest on Facebook
PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway announced that, through a new Facebook contest, it will donate $20,000 to "America’s Most Natural City" to help maintain its park facilities.
The winning city, which will be chosen via Facebook vote on the company’s fan page, will be awarded with 25 picnic tables, sectioned off from the 305-ft. douglas fir table that recently broke the Guinness World Record for the World’s Longest Picnic Table, which was built in celebration of Safeway’s Open Nature, a new 100% natural line of high-quality foods, Safeway reported.
Through Sept. 16, consumers can visit Facebook and vote for 1-of-15 preselected cities, including: Austin, Texas; Baltimore; Chicago; Dallas; Denver; Houston; Los Angeles; Phoenix; Portland, Ore.; Sacramento; San Diego; San Francisco; Seattle; Tucson and Washington, D.C. Safeway said it is further encouraging people to vote by offering the chance to win a year’s supply of free Open Nature foods.
"When we developed Open Nature, we listened to our customers to help us define what natural should mean when it comes to their food," Safeway VP innovation, consumer brands Nancy Cota said. "We heard what they were looking for in natural foods, it’s now time to hear what they think makes their city the most natural city in the U.S. Whether it’s their parks, outdoor activities or their promise to be environmentally friendly, we want to reward that city’s commitment to being natural. Local parks and recreation departments across the country told us they need support due to budget cuts and we want to step up and make a difference."
Impax confirms patent challenge for generic Nuedexta
HAYWARD, Calif. — Impax Labs has hit a roadblock in its attempts to market a generic pseudobulbar affect treatment.
Impax said that Avanir Pharmaceuticals, Avanir Holding Co. and the Center for Neurologic Study filed a patent infringement suit in the U.S. District Court of Delaware in connection with Impax’s attempt to market a generic version of Nuedexta capsules (dextromethorphan hydrobromide and quinidine sulfate) in the 20-mg/10-mg strength.
The generic drug maker recently submitted an abbreviated new drug application containing a paragraph IV certification to the Food and Drug Administration, which was accepted by the regulatory agency.
U.S. sales of Nuedexta were approximately $3.6 million for the seven-month period ended in July, according to Wolters Kluwer Health data.
