Amazon, Walmart experiment with lockers

NEW YORK — Amazon and Walmart’s e-commerce division are expanding and starting programs to allow customers to order items online and then pick them up from lockers stationed at brick-and-mortar retailers.

Amazon has been running such a program for a couple of years in a few major cities, including installing the lockers at Rite Aid stores in cities like New York. The lockers allow customers to select a locker location for delivery and then retrieve ordered items automatically using a six-digit code.

According to reports, Amazon has lately expanded its program into other markets, such as northern New Jersey, while Walmart announced last week that it would test a similar system starting this summer at about 12 stores, though the locations of the stores were not disclosed.

Survey finds ‘retail therapy’ common among Americans

SAN FRANCISCO — More than half of Americans shop and spend money to improve their moods, according to a new survey.

The study, by Ebates.com, found that 63.9% of women engage in "retail therapy," compared with 39.8% of men, and the belief that it improves moods was found among 39.2% of women, compared with 20.6% of men. The survey was conducted online by TNS Global and included 1,000 adults.

"Our survey confirms that shopping truly is ‘therapy’ for many people and can help raise one’s spirits after a bad day," Ebates.com CEO Kevin Johnson said. "Online shopping makes this pick-me-up only a couple of clicks away."

The survey also found that up to 80.7% of Americans feel best when shopping to lift their moods, and of them, 61.8% like shopping during a sale, while 49.4% like receiving rewards, 45% like free shipping and 44.6% like using coupons. A greater share of respondents found the retail therapy effects of online shopping better than shopping at brick-and-mortar stores, mostly because it’s more convenient.

Clipix launches new Web service to help simplify information aggregation

FORT LEE, N.J. — Clipix, a new free Web service launched last month, combines online bookmarking with file sharing and organization into one tool. Users now have a single service solution for saving Web content, uploading and sharing photos, and organizing documents all in one completely private or shareable space. Users can go to Clipix.com, drag and drop a "clip" button onto their browser bar, and then click whenever they find an item that they want to reference later. Clipix is accessible online and as a cross-mobile application on iPhone and Android devices. 

"Clipix is more than a page fold on the Internet. It was created as a tool to organize the hundreds of pieces of digital content we each collect, interact with and want to reference on a daily basis," stated Clipix founder Oded Berkowitz. "It’s just as useful to the Web surfer who wants to organize his funny videos into clipboards as it is to a team of professionals collaborating on a project via Syncboards."

Clipix allows users to clip items into existing clipboards — such as "Articles I Want to Read" or "Vacation Ideas" — and if the item does not fit into an existing category, users can create a new customized clipboard. 

And there are no legal concerns, according to the company. "Clipix has taken proactive steps to ensure users’ online safety when clipping content from the Web and protecting image owners’ copyrights," the company stated.
