Top executives of several pharmacy retailers in British Columbia, including London Drugs, Safeway and Rexall, are threatening to take legal action against the College of Pharmacists of B.C. if it tries to block tobacco sales in their stores on the grounds that the college would be exceeding its powers and jurisdiction, the Vancouver Sun reported.

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday proposed a new rule that would extend the agency's tobacco authority to cover additional tobacco products. The proposal is part of the FDA's implementation of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco control Act, which was signed by President Barack Obama in 2009.
