NEW YORK — A shift in consumer shopping is helping to fuel sales of women’s fragrances at mass.


“Consumers are shifting their fragrance purchasing from high-end channels, such as department stores, to more mass-market channels, such as drug stores and supermarkets/hypermarkets,” stated research firm Euromonitor International. “While department stores have suffered a drop in foot traffic during the recession, store formats such as supermarkets/hypermarkets and mass merchandisers selling necessities have seen steady traffic levels.”

Sales of diet-aid and weight-loss solutions for the past year have been relatively flat, but a confluence of factors — childhood obesity approaching “epidemic” status combined with the real need to reduce escalating healthcare costs connected to obesity — could become a real driver behind weight-loss products in the coming year.

An expected overall upswing in the economy in 2011 is likely to lead to consumers loosening the grip on their wallets. However, for the time being, the sluggish economy continues to shift hair care buying behavior.
“

Value will remain the driving force behind hair care sales, despite a predicted upswing in the economy in 2011, as consumers are expected to remain careful spenders within the hair care sector,” stated research firm Euromonitor International.

The retailer’s back-to-basics strategy is good news for OTC suppliers, because going back to basics at Walmart also means going back to a broader product selection. Between the resumption of Action Alley and a recommitment to assortment, Walmart already has grown its carrying inventory by 4%, and the company plans to grow its inventory at a rate of half the 
expected sales lift.

Functional beverages are moving to the next level. Sean Seitzinger, partner at Symphony Consulting of the SymphonyIRI Group, said that functional foods are one of the fastest-growing areas of the supermarket, recording 27% growth over the past three years. “Functional beverages, which comprise 63% of the category, are the center plate of that story,” Seitzinger said.
