LAS VEGAS — Among the highlights of this year’s Retail Clinician Education Congress, currently taking place here in Las Vegas, was a CEO/Leadership Panel and the Clinician Awards for Excellence.
The 2013 RCEC conference, which is hosted by the Drug Store News Group in conjunction with the Convenient Care Association and Partners in Healthcare Education, is being held at the Planet Hollywood Resort in Las Vegas. It runs from May 14 to May 16.
This year’s meeting not only kicked off with a bang on Tuesday but the day also ended on a strong note as executive management gathered for a panel discussion on “The Evolution of Retail Clinics: Where They Started and Where They Are Going.”
The hour-long discussion offered advanced practice clinicians and executive management an update on healthcare changes, challenges and opportunities that will be reflected in their clinical practice over the next few years. Participants included:
When asked about how the clinics are evaluating the future needs of the population to improve patient outcomes, Helle told attendees:
“As we look at how we can help to create value it is really in three areas. First, it is looking at how we can expand our service offerings. So, to move what has historically been a model focused on minor, episodic care to one that has focus on additional prevention and wellness services, as well as chronic condition management services. ... Second, it is creating affiliations with other providers, physicians groups and health systems to ensure that we can truly begin to work our way into a true population health model. … Third, is really around enabling robust data capture and exchange of clinical information because that is where the magic is really created.”
“Our organization is led by clinicians so we take a clinicians’ eye view to the practice of medicine … We are working both to recruit both nurse practitioners and physicians assistants …,” said Sussman, when asked about what clinics are doing to help build the pipeline of healthcare providers.
Capping off Tuesday's agenda was the highly anticipated Clinician Awards for Excellence (CARE) awards ceremony to honor the “Unsung Heroes” who work tirelessly each day to help further the cause of retail-based health care.

The winner of this year’s Loretta Ford CARE Lifetime Achievement Award was Beverly Malone, CEO of the National League for Nursing and Tuesday’s keynote speaker on “Reconfiguring the Workforce to Transform the Nation’s Health System.”
Rob Eder of the Drug Store News Group and Tine Hansen-Turton of the CCA presented Beverly Malone (center) with the Loretta Ford CARE Lifetime Achievement Award.
CEO of the NLN since February 2007, Malone is among the nation’s most vocal leaders in the national conversation about the nursing and nurse educator shortage, and the role of nursing in ensuring access to safe, quality, culturally competent care to diverse patient populations, both domestically and globally.
Past winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award include Loretta Ford, who helped revolutionize the nursing profession more than 40 years ago with her work in co-founding the nation’s first pediatric nurse practitioner program; Mona Counts, who opened one of the first all nurse practitioner practices in the United States; Shirley Chater, former commissioner of the U.S. Social Security Administration; and Hal Rosenbluth, co-founder of Take Care Health Systems.
