Department of Health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sebelius visited a CVS/pharmacy and MinuteClinic in Jacksonville, Fla., on Aug. 15 to highlight new benefits and options for Medicare beneficiaries that will help them stay healthier.

These services include a free annual wellness visit, allowing patients to meet with their doctor to discuss health concerns and the best ways to stay healthy, as well as a wide variety of preventive tests and screenings, most at no cost to patients.

Pharmaca’s new 1,000-sq.-ft. Natural Beauty Bar in Los Angeles along Sunset Boulevard centers around two areas: the brow bar for waxing and threading services and the makeup area for makeup application and makeovers.

“With [the new beauty bar], it’s really allowed us to expand on some new items,” Tiana Ukleja, Pharmaca’s health and beauty category manager, told Drug Store News. “We have a great partnership with a brand called SpaRituals. [Previously] we had only been able to house 24 [nail] colors, now we have 200.”

Lewis Drug is celebrating its 70th anniversary — a milestone that can be attributed, in part, to its willingness to embrace change. And the philosophy is paying off. Not only is the regional player celebrating seven decades, but Lewis Drug also is having its best year to date in the history of the company. It is commemorating 70 years through promotional materials and block parties.

It may be more than just coincidence that Walgreens has decided to really blow the doors off of retail pharmacy in the same city that screams horsepower every year over Memorial Day weekend. Walgreens is building a market-driven, consumer-focused retail health destination center that is focused on driving improved healthcare value for customers. And even as those Indy 500 drivers are chugging their milk at the Brickyard, Walgreens' pharmacists will be celebrating a victory of their own as they and their customers help redefine what “drug store” means in shopper parlance.

One of the first lessons in life that children learn is that getting sick isn’t fun, and going to the pharmacy isn’t too exciting either. In 2004, pharmacist Charles Tabouchirani decided to change that by opening Cherry’s Pharmacy, a store that specializes in dealing with children. The store is small — 550 sq. ft. — but a bright mural, a collection of toys and an electric model train that travels in a loop along the wall make an inviting waiting room for Cherry’s core customers.
