Target is looking for a lift in beauty sales through a new concept it currently is testing in eight Chicago-area stores. Incorporating some familiar elements from its existing beauty departments, such as backlit gondolas and special presentations for premium products, the new beauty layout unites the retailer's cosmetic, skin care and hair care categories into one easy-to-navigate area.

Kerr Drug is drawing heavy customer traffic and new shoppers with a new store-within-a-store format, called Naturally Kerr, that offers a large selection of natural and organic foods and homeopathic products. The concept debuted in two Kerr stores in April to coincide with Earth Day 2009. The stores, located in Kerr's home market of Raleigh, N.C., and in Asheville, N.C., devote roughly one-quarter of their selling floor to the new concept. To make space for the concept, Kerr eliminated automotive, light bulbs, small appliances and hardware.

If anyone thinks that CVS has recast itself solely as a healthcare company, given its string of acquisitions in recent years — particularly, Caremark and MinuteClinic — they probably haven’t seen a Beauty360 store yet. In fact, standing in the middle of one of these 3,000 sq.-ft., high-end beauty boutiques, you might have a hard time recognizing you were in a CVS store at all.

CVS' hot new beauty concept, Beauty360, was introduced Nov. 3 at a special unveiling at the chain’s newest Capitol district store, in the very center of Dupont Circle. In fact, depending upon which side of the store you are on, you may have a difficult time figuring out that you are in a CVS/pharmacy at all. With a separate entrance onto busy Connecticut Avenue, Beauty 360 makes a major statement among the other shops that line the bustling shopping area. And it’s all about beauty.

It appears the airport-based retail health concept is really taking flight. Paradies Shops last month opened its second Drugs & More airport-retail concept in the Raleigh-Durham area airport and has designs on opening a third Drugs & More store in Atlanta early next year.
