Costco takes another bite of the Big Apple with new Manhattan store (Part 1)

The store is the first in Manhattan, but the fourth in New York City, joining stores in Brooklyn, Staten Island and Queens.

Due to its smaller size, the store saved space by trimming down some products, particularly those not suitable for most New Yorkers, such as patio furniture.

A trickle of patrons turned into a swell Thursday morning after Costco opened its first store in Manhattan. The Issaquah, Wash.-based membership mass merchandising chain opened its doors in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new East River Plaza development in East Harlem. The store is the fourth in New York City, after the stores in Brooklyn, Staten Island and Queens.
