MIDDLETON, Tenn. — Fred’s Super Dollar is piloting a new store concept called GetWell Drug and Dollar that features a heavy focus on pharmacy, OTC and value-oriented convenience basics. The 8,000-sq.-ft. locations, half the size of a typical Fred’s, will field some 7,500 front-end SKUs, 30% of which will be comprised of health-and-wellness items.

The Obama administration recently stressed the importance of increasing coverage of HIV treatment, as well as increasing access to HIV testing and counseling. It's an initiative that Walgreens, with more than 700 HIV-specialized pharmacies and over 2,000 pharmacists with special HIV/AIDS-accredited educational training, follows closely. Walgreens' senior manager for HIV/AIDS and hepatitis pharmacy services Glen Pietrandoni talked with DSN on the scope of Walgreens' HIV/AIDS services.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Nearly 100 suppliers and Rite Aid executives gathered here last week, at the Harrisburg Hilton, for an exclusive reception to celebrate the Dec. 10 issue of DSN, which featured a special 40-page report on Rite Aid. In addition to a special donation on behalf of DSN in support of the Rite Aid Foundation, DSN publisher Wayne Bennett also unveiled a special commemorative T-shirt for Rite Aid associates bearing the signature "Rite Aid Gets Well" art from the cover of the Dec. 10 issue.

For Rite Aid, 50 is the magic number this year.


In September, the drug chain marked its 50 years in business with a six-month campaign to promote its focus on health and wellness, kicking off a nationwide tour near its Camp Hill, Pa., headquarters. From there, the tour visited Baltimore, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Portland, Ore., and other cities.
