Pharmacists are likely to play an even greater role in patients' health care than they do now, possibly branching into services like shots and checkups, Jim Carroll told DSN. Technology will play a greater role as well, as there is greater connectivity with home medical technology devices and the Internet that changes the relationship between patients, doctors and pharmacists. "I think we're going to see this fascinatingly strange, very connected world appearing in every aspect of retail, and it's all driven by mobile devices," Carroll said.

A growing number of cities — including Seattle, where Glen Hiemstra lives — are ditching the 1950s highways-and-suburbs school of development and embracing dense city centers and walkable communities. One of the biggest things people want to walk to is a place to get food, Hiemstra told DSN. Drug stores' approach to food has often been similar to that of convenience stores, but changing living patterns mean that fresh foods and prepared foods could become more common, making the drug store a destination for everything from fruit salad to sushi. In addition, 3D printing could grow in importance as drug stores use it to create small products and components, as well as on-demand items for customers, saving storeroom space in the process.

As drug store chains like Walgreens, Duane Reade, Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs — not to mention a few independents as well — go upscale, one of the noticeable changes they make is to the beauty department. But a key element, beauty futurist Jeanine Recckio told DSN, is "retailtainment." In other words, beauty should be fun, and as more pharmacy retailers understand that, the line that divides their beauty departments from those of specialty and department stores will become increasingly thin.

As younger generations and even older people become more wired - and wireless - they will demand greater convenience in how they get their products. As an example of things to come, Doug Stephens tested eBay Now, a service from the online retailer that allows somebody to order an item with a mobile device and have it delivered anywhere, whether it's a permanent address or — as Stephens found — a park bench. Stephens is currently working on a TV series about the future of retail.

AccentHealth's Dan Stone and PatientPoint's Tom McGuinness, co-founders of the Point of Care Communication Council, sat down with DSN before the group's inaugural meeting. The new association couldn't have come at a better time as healthcare providers look forward to the kind of outcomes-based medicine practice that will be driven by the Jan. 1, 2014 implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Because in an effort to achieve those better outcomes at the patient level, practitioners will need more health information at the point of care.

Innovation EVP global business development, Doyle Jensen, explained, there are a lot of services that help retailers improve the customer experience at the front-end of the store, but not enough focused on patient engagement at the pharmacy counter. That was the motivation behind the launch of Pharmacy Intelligence, Innovation’s technology solution that enables retailers to measure the impact an investment in new pharmacy technology will have before ever committing to it, Jensen told DSNTV in a recent edition of DSN Executive Viewpoints.
