As 2015 draws to a close, the year is on track to be one in which the value of the branded drugs losing their patent protection approaches an all-time high. The dozens of drugs that will have lost their patent protection this year are estimated to have global sales of $44 billion a year — the highest total since $53 billion worth of medications went off patent in 2012.

GlaxoSmithKline is celebrating 300 years. Originating as a small pharmacy in East London in 1715, GlaxoSmithKline has grown into the sixth largest global pharmaceutical company, the International Business Times reported Monday. "I'm extremely proud of all the history we have behind us," noted Nikki Yakes, GSK UK Pharma general manager. "It is a quite remarkable achievement to be able to trace our roots back to one young entrepreneur in 1715." (International Business Times)

The New York Times reported Tuesday that embattled drug maker Turing Pharmaceuticals, which made headlines when it acquired Daraprim and raised the price by more than 5,000% overnight, had announced a planned drop in price by the end of 2015. The Times pointed out that the 10% decrease. “Since acquiring Daraprim three months ago, our top priority has been to ensure that patients who need Daraprim have ready, affordable access to it,” Turing said in a letter.
