Watson subsidiary launches generic Lipitor

MORRISTOWN, N.J. A subsidiary of generic drug maker Watson Pharmaceuticals has launched a version of a cholesterol-lowering drug in Canada, Watson said Wednesday.

Watson announced that subsidiary Cobalt Pharmaceuticals launched a version of Pfizer’s Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) in the 10, 20, 40 and 80 mg strengths.

The world’s top-selling drug, Lipitor had Canadian sales of $1 billion during the 12-month period ended March 2010, U.S. sales of $7.5 billion and global sales of $13.3 billion in 2009, according to IMS Health. Ranbaxy Labs plans to launch a generic version for the U.S. market next year.
