Safeway converting trucks to bio-diesel

PLEASANTON, Calif. Safeway says it’s converting its entire fleet of delivery trucks to bio-diesel this year in its latest sustainability initiative.

Safeway president Steve Burd plans to release details on the initiative at a press conference at its Dublin, Calif. store on Jan. 18. That store also happens to be one powered entirely by solar energy.

The company currently operates more than 1,000 big rig delivery trucks and estimates converting to bio-diesel will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 75 million pounds each year, the equivalent of taking 7,500 passenger vehicles off the road. Safeway plans to use B20 bio-diesel, which is a combination of 20 percent bio-diesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel.
