Pharmacy crime discussed at NCPA conference

PHILADELPHIA Community pharmacists got a briefing about pharmacy security from a company that has learned a lot about it at the National Community Pharmacists Association's annual Convention and Trade Exposition in Philadelphia.

Purdue Pharma, which makes the prescription opioid painkiller OxyContin (oxycodone), debuted the second annual “RxPatrol Pharmacy Safety and Security” video. Purdue created the video under a partnership with the NCPA as part of the organization’s Protect Your Pharmacy Now! initiative, started in 2008. RxPatrol is a program that Purdue created in May 2003 to track pharmacy crime.

In the video, NCPA member Jim Fields and Purdue director of law enforcement liaison and education Rich Zenuch discuss pharmacy burglary and how to prevent it, touring Fields’ pharmacy in Ft. Smith, Ark., to evaluate his security measures.

“Pharmacy crime affects our customers, our staff and our businesses,” NCPA president Joseph Harmison stated. “As communities across the country experience robberies and burglaries, NCPA is pleased to continue our Protect Your Pharmacy Now! partnership with Purdue’s RxPatrol program to help our members prevent pharmacy crime.”
