New York pharmacist gives away free kids' vitamins

Austin Pharmacy owner named NY1's "Queens Person of the Week"

NEW YORK — A pharmacist in Queens has received accolades for giving out vitamins to children whose families can't afford them.

New York television station NY1 earlier this year named Nina Shamayeva, owner of Austin Pharmacy in the Forest Hills neighborhood, as its "Queens Person of the Week" for her free vitamin program, whereby children younger than 12 years old can receive a free bottle of chewable vitamins each month for a year. "A lot of people cannot afford to buy vitamins for their kinds," Shamayeva said.

The pharmacy also checks with pediatricians to make sure that children receive the right vitamins. The program is available to all children regardless of family income.
