National Soda Summit to focus on obesity, diabetes

WASHINGTON — Public health officials from Boston, California, New York City and other jurisdictions across the nation will head to Washington for the second National Soda Summit, which begins on Wednesday.

The summit is especially timely, as the California state senate recently passed legislation to place warning labels on soda and other sugary beverages and as lawyers in New York City seek to appeal a lower court's injunction against the city's cap on soda serving sizes.

The summit will focus on reducing obesity, diabetes and other diseases. Researchers, physicians, nutritionists, foundation executives and health groups also will share information and strategies on how to effect policy change at the local, state and national levels.
