ZAANDAM, Netherlands — Coming home after a long vacation is often described as coming "back to the grind" or "back to reality." For people who might have thrown away perishable foods before leaving, that reality often includes an empty refrigerator at inconvenient hours or in the worst throes of jet lag.
Dutch supermarket chain Albert Heijn has introduced a new service designed to help alleviate the stress of getting home tired and hungry with nothing to eat. The chain, owned by Royal Ahold, has introduced the Albert Heijn Pick Up Point at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. The service allows customers to order items online from wherever they're vacationing and then pick them up upon arrival. Ahold also owns the Stop & Shop, Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa., and Giant Food of Landover, Md., supermarket chains in the United States, as well as the Peapod online grocery service.
"The new pick-up point of Albert Heijn is a great new service for travelers, visitors and Schiphol staff," Schiphol Group EVP Maarten de Groof said. "It fits perfectly with all other facilities and services we offer at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol."
