Closeup of newest DR flagship shows off food, Look Boutique

NEW YORK Drug Store News took a tour to get a first-hand glimpse. —Duane Reade recently took the wraps off its flagship store in Union Square, a large, sleek location that brings together under one roof the retailer’s newest innovations.

Upon entering the 24-hour location, which is on the site once occupied by a Virgin Megastore, consumers are greeted by an expansive food offering that includes an island of such meals-on-the-go as oatmeal, sushi, sandwiches and salads; baked goods with a self-service coffee bar; and an array of frozen foods.

The 13,944-sq.-ft. store also is an impressive destination for beauty, and features an expanded Look Boutique, complete with a Ramy Brow Bar offering a menu of tweezing, shaping and sculpting options for eyebrows.

Located toward the rear of the store near the pharmacy department is a walk-in physician-staffed medical clinic known as a “Doctor on Premises,” which is operated by New York Walk-In Medical Group. There now are seven such clinics, which are affiliated with Beth Israel Medical Center and St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, operating within select Duane Reade stores.

To further cater to the active neighborhood, the store also offers a large open cooler of beer; an endcap dubbed “Restaurant Row,” which features such food items as pasta sauces from New York restaurateurs; and a self-service Blockbuster movie rental kiosk. Given that the store practically is surrounded by New York University dorms, it accepts NYU Campus Cash.
