BD introduces new, thinner needle for diabetes patients

Five-bevel 'PentaPoint' designed for increased comfort, adherence

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — BD has introduced a needle that it said was designed to enhance adherence and comfort among patients with diabetes.

The company's BD Medical division announced the introduction of the Ultra-Fine Nano pen needle with a feature called PentaPoint Comfort technology. Most pen needles contain three bevels, but PentaPoint has a five-bevel needle tip design that creates a flatter, thinner surface to help penetrate the skin with greater ease. The company said a clinical home-use study indicated patients who used the needle reported it as less painful, easier to insert and more comfortable overall than three-bevel needles.

"We are excited to provide another first-to-market innovation, designed to dramatically improve the injection experience for the millions of people living with diabetes," BD Medical president for diabetes care Linda Tharby said. "Building on the introduction of BD's smallest needle, the BD Nano, we are confident that our new, patented PentaPoint Comfort technology will provide an even more comfortable injection experience."
