Aton Pharma launches generic for treating glaucoma, ocular hypertension

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. Aton Pharma has launched an authorized generic of a drug for glaucoma and ocular hypertension, the drug maker announced Tuesday.

Timolol maleate ophthalmic gel-foruming solution is an authorized generic of Timoptic-XE, used to treat intraocular pressure in patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma. Aton also plans to make branded Timoptic-XE available.

“Authorized generics are a very effective sales strategy for Aton Pharma’s product portfolio,” Aton CEO Michael Wells said in a statement. “We are extremely pleased with the successful launch of the authorized generic for Timoptic-XE and we are highly confident in our ability to execute this type of program for other Aton products when the opportunity arises.”

Authorized generics are branded drugs sold under their generic names, usually for lower prices than their brand-name versions and either by the company that owns the branded drug’s patent or by a third-party company through a contract.
